The Word of Wisdom: The Sacrament of Marriage

d/C 89

1 A Word of Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion

Proverbs 1:20

Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

-Sisters’ Participation in the Gathering of Israel
By President Russell M. Nelson

My dear sisters, we need you! We “need your strength, yourconversion, your conviction, your ability to lead, your wisdom, and your voices.” We simply cannot gather Israel without you.

by revelation and…

2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days

Alma 29:8

For behold, the Lord doth grant unto all nations, of their own nation and tongue, to teach his word, yea, in wisdom, all that he seeth fit that they should have; therefore we see that the Lord doth counsel in wisdom, according to that which is just and true.

Proverbs 1:5

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

capacity of the weak

3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.

Men can and often do communicate the love of Heavenly Father and the Savior to others. But women have a special gift for it—a divine endowment. You have the capacity to sense what someone needs—and when he or she needs it.

warned and forewarned

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation

Women see things differently than men do, and oh, how we need your perspective! Your nature leads you to think of others first, to consider the effect that any course of action will have on others.

As President Eyring pointed out, it was our glorious Mother Eve—with her far-reaching vision of our Heavenly Father’s plan—who initiated what we call ‘‘the Fall.” Her wise and courageous choice and Adam’s supporting decision moved God’s plan of happiness forward.

sacrament of marriage

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

Isa 28:7

But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

Although a wine can be made strong, strong drinks are generally made with grains, such as vodka from wheat.

In this understanding we have represented the wine and bread of a traditional sacrament.

However, I have come to understand that the Word of Wisdom is more probably a discourse on the offering and sacrament of marriage more than of simply what to eat and not eat.

The conversion of water to grape juice to wine symbolically represents the conversion process of women.

The conversion of grain to bread symbolically represents the conversion of men.

There is a sacrament in both of those conversions, as men and women help each other become and develop the divine traits they came to manifest on earth.

pure wine

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

Matt 5:28

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

In this verse, Jesus denounces lust in any form towards a woman. Even in marriage a man isn’t to lust.

In truth, through my temple covenants I am first tied to Christ before I ever enter into marriage with a man on earth.

Therefore, I am His, and He would never look on me with lust, or to satisfy an appetite for his own physical pleasure.

He is instructing all men to see the women of the world with His eyes of pure love, not with eyes of lust, and of course, never pornography.

The conversion of women from water to wine need not be made in the traditional way either. Jesus showed us at the marriage in Cana that he could turn water to wine in a moment, and it need not be pressed, bottled and stored until it is made strong.

Likewise, I need not need to do, or be, or dress up to be anything other than I am, pure and sweet, to be intimate with my spouse.

If I need to arouse him or turn him on to see me for the divine daughter that I am, then he is spiritually dead, asleep or already drunk and wasted on his own lusts.

And I never have to take part in that, for I value the divine being that I am.

Washing with Strong Drink

7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.

John 6:51

I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Because strong drinks are made from grain, in the sense of the sacrament, then we can symbolically tie this to bread and the eating of bread and flesh is tied to gluttony and the belly.

We all use hand sanitizer, more so these days, but what does it really mean to wash our bodies in strong drink?

Vodka is awesome for the washing of our physical bodies, especially in balancing out bacteria and odors, preventing cold sores, and as a facial toner. If you aren’t using strong drinks to wash your physical bodies, then how are you following this counsel?

If Christ’s teachings are likened to bread, conversion of grain, and by symbolic association, strong drink, then how are we using his teachings to wash our bodies?

-Women and Gospel Learning in the Home
By President Henry B. Eyring

Why, then, does a daughter of God in a united and equal relationship receive the primary responsibility to nourish with the most important nutrient all must receive, a knowledge of truth coming from heaven? As nearly as I can see, that has been the Lord’s way since families were created in this world.

For instance, it was Eve who received the knowledge that Adam needed to partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge for them to keep all of God’s commandments and to form a family. I do not know why it came to Eve first, but Adam and Eve were perfectly united when the knowledge was poured out on Adam.

Poured out like a strong drink or (alcohol) spirit.

BRuises

8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.

JST Jer. 30:12–13

thy bruise is not incurable, although thy wounds are grievous. Is there none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up? Hast thou no healing medicines?

BRUISES can symbolize a break or fracture, or be referring to the interpretation of dreams or questions, or even  a crushing oppression.

CATTLE is an important symbol in Hebrew as well. It was used for plowing the fields, and was often yoked, which is symbolic of man being yoked with Christ.

But a cattle can also represent a possession of great use or for pleasure. In many ways, cattle represent man himself as a servant of Christ. And if he is sick he cannot work.

If HERBS are symbolically a currency, then the use of TOBACCO which is an HERB for bruises and healing, might be more of lesson on how to use our financial resources for binding and healing wounds and bruises.

It might even open up a discussion on times when a woman must work to support the household instead of the man, or when they both must carry the load.

Hot drinks

9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.

Col 3:8

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

HOT DRINKS is not a biblical term, but the idea of HOT is most often used to demonstrate anger, passion, lust, consuming like a fire or eat for gluttony.

ORdained herbs

10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man.

D/C 1:39

For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

HERBS (H6212) comes from the ancient pictograph family of AYIN/EYE + SIN/THORN

Under this family is the collection of words: DO, WORK, ANGRY, HERB, STRIVE, GIVE.A.TENTH, TEN.

Within this context, HERB carries a much richer symbolism as it is tied to the use of money for the work of God, and attributes itself to the giving of tithing.

Isa 6:13

But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

prudence

11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.

Prov 19:11

The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his gloryto pass over a transgression.

Psa 111:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

ordained flesh

12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;

Gen 2:20-24

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Matt 16:17

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Col 2:16-19

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

winter, cold, famine

13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

Amos 3:15

And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord.

The words WINTER, WET, WHET, WED, and WEDDING are all related.

ordained grain

14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth;

1 Neph 8:1

And it came to pass that we had gathered together all manner of seeds of every kind, both of grain of every kind, and also of the seeds of fruit of every kind.

excess of hunger

15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.

be fruitful

16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground

what to eat sounds like wheat

17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.

I am still digging through the intended meaning if this verse. Should be fun!

keep these sayings

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

Again, another huge promise that outweighs the idea of a diet.

to KEEP means to guard and protect.

SPiritual treasures

19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

What more  is there to find hidden in the meaning of words and phrases found in this section, called The Word of Wisdom?

not faint

20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.

Compar with the 2000 Stripling warriors in Alma. All the sons were injured and bled heavily, but none were killed.

a promise

21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

I find it so interesting that we have not considered the Word of Wisdom  for more than a guide to eating food and avoiding drugs, simply for the reason of this promise.  If we eat all and avoid bad foods, our first born won’t die or we won’t. It makes me think there is definitely more hidden in the meanings.
